WHY HYDRATE , WHY NUUN!!

Let’s start with what are ELECTROLYTES?

Electrolytes are certain nutrients (or chemicals) present in your body that have many important functions — from regulating your heartbeat to allowing your muscles to contract so you can move.

Some of the major roles that electrolytes have within the body include:

  • Calcium: helping with muscle contractions, nerve signaling, blood clotting, cell division, and forming/maintaining bones and teeth
  • Potassium: helping keep blood pressure levels stable, regulating heart contractions, helping with muscle functions
  • Magnesium: needed for muscle contractions, proper heart rhythms, nerve functioning, bone-building and strength, reducing anxiety, digestion, and keeping a stable protein-fluid balance
  • Sodium: helps maintain fluid balance, needed for muscle contractions, and helps with nerve signaling
  • Chloride: maintains fluid balance

Signs and Symptoms of an Electrolyte Imbalance

Because electrolytes have so many different roles within the body, an imbalance normally causes noticeable changes in how you feel pretty quickly. Depending on the type of electrolyte imbalance you experience, a number of symptoms can occur including:

  • Muscle aches, spasms, twitches and weakness
  • Restlessness
  • Anxiety
  • Frequent headaches
  • Feel very thirsty
  • Insomnia
  • Fever
  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeats
  • Digestive issues like cramps, constipation or diarrhea

I think any active person that do maintain a healthy activity level should benefit electrolytes.  I am not marathon runner or running in general , period. I do Olympic weightlifting but in our programming we have volumes that requires multiple repetition for sets which leaves us breathless to extent. Start to finish with warming up , mobility work , lifting weights and cooling can take about 2 to 2:30 hours easy and some of us do 2 a day sessions. We sweat a lot , we deplete all of our carbohydrate resources. We need serious amounts of energy and hydration for proper muscle contraction to be able to move quite a bit of weight around. Muscle contraction depends on the presence of potassium, calcium and sodium ions and insufficient levels of these ions may lead to muscle weakness or spasms.

People who exercise regularly should replace their electrolytes by drinking sports drinks that are fortified with potassium and sodium. But do you want to consume Sports drink that are high in sugar and calories? If you are in a competitive  weightlifting , body building where you need to maintain or stay close to your weight class , calories and where they come from are very important. Why consume 42 gram of carbs from junk where you can get clean 4 grams of carbs and feel better and eat rest of your 40 gram carbs from fruits or complex carbs. Your body needs electrolytes not a sugar crash!

That is where i love NUUN! My dear friend Laura Tucker who is the Regional Sales Manager for NUUN introduced me to these little magic tablets and i was hooked.
